Hungarian Family History and Indexing

The week started out a little slow with a few cancelled lessons, a few people not wanting to meet anymore; so we ventured out and started talking to as many people as possible. We had some really great experiences while we were out talking to people on the street. I remember one in particular, it was a girl probably just a little older than myself who was standing outside an apartment building looking so sad. We went up and talked with her and asked what the most important thing was to her and she answered "my family." We talked about families for a few minutes and I was able to tell her that my family is also the most important thing to me and that is why I came to Hungary and haven't seen them for a year and a half. We were able to share a little bit with her about how families can be together forever and that is why we left our families for a short time so we could come teach other individuals about 'forever families'. I wish I could describe the situation better, but at the end she was beaming with happiness and we could feel her genuine interest. She wants to meet and learn more so we swapped numbers and hopefully we can meet again really soon!

On Wednesday, we went to Budapest for Zone Conference, which went really well. Sister Vielstich and I gave a training on prayer and accountability and on building a stronger relationship with our Heavenly Father.

We were able to meet with one person this week, her name is Erzsébet and she used to meet with the missionaries a few years ago. She was so happy we called and we were able to meet with her before Angolóra. We found out her mom recently passed away and she was having a hard time. We talked with her about the Plan of Happiness and I shared with her Moroni 7:41, which is all about finding hope in the resurrection.

"And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise."

This promises us that we can live with our families forever and that this life in not the end. I find such comfort in that! She is such a sweet lady and she even stayed for English class where we taught comparatives - good, better, best. When we had everyone practice at the end, she said "I am happier today than yesterday." and smiled at us. It was so cute!

We also went to Békéscsaba this week for exchanges which meant I got to be with Benson nővér! It was so great to be with her, she is a sweet friend. We had an enjoyable split and the next day was her birthday so in the morning, sister Vielstich and I decorated their apartment and put candles in a cake! It was really fun. I also got to see Rózsa for the last time, she is a member there that I had gotten to know pretty well over several times going on splits to Békéscsaba. Vielstich nővér and I ended up having to run to the train station and catch the train to get back to help with a Relief Society activity. The ticket lady laughed and told us we wouldn't make it to the train that was leaving in a minute but we sprinted down the stairs and back up another to the platform where they had their sign up to have the train leave but we were able to get on at the last second and basically as soon as I got up the train stairs, it started to move. It made for an adventure. We went to the Relief Society activity which was so great, I just adore the members here, they are so loving and are such wonderful examples to me. I learned how to use the Family Search website and I also learned how to read old Hungarian handwriting and how to index! It was so fun. I loved doing it and it was good to be with the members and helping them. Church was also great yesterday, I love this tiny branch, they are so amazing.

I also finished reading the Book of Mormon in Hungarian yesterday! I used to think I would never be able to learn another language and be able to communicate with it and read books in it. I am forever grateful for having this opportunity to do so. Learning Hungarian has been an experience and I really am still learning, but reading the Book of Mormon in another language other than my own has been a huge blessing. Different things stood out to me and as I finished it yesterday I felt such a peace and I know that through this book, we truly can draw closer to our Heavenly Father and His son, Jesus Christ.

I hope you have a great week!
Sok szeretettel, Schoendorfer Nővér

A kis herceg (little prince) statue.

And some pictures of my Book of Mormon; the earlier chapters have almost every other word written in.....but towards the end of the book there are only a few words written in.

  3. The accomplishment itself is wonderful, but what it represents from start to finish is fantastic! You have learned to read, write, serve, laugh, dream, live and love in Hungarian!! I can't imagine how changed you must feel. You were remarkable before; you can't help but be even more so now. Can't wait to welcome you home!
